Kim Simmons known as “The Man Who Shot Luke Skywalker” is the talented photographer behind much of the iconic imagery of Kenner’s vintage Star Wars toy line, His photography work has left a lasting mark on the franchise's visual legacy. His passion for creating captivating scenes to be displayed on the toy boxes have
resonate with collectors, as well as children of all ages, creating a lasting legacy for Star Wars toys.
One of Simmons’ most notable projects came in 1982 when he crafted and photographed the expansive Hoth Battle Scene for Kenner, which also served as the focal point of his Master of Photography thesis. Simmons continued to photograph Star Wars products until Hasbro’s departure from Cincinnati in 2001. His work
has had an indelible impact on the toy industry as well as an enduring impact on the Star Wars toy line. The images which he created have not only become regarded as representative symbols throughout the world but have graced the pages of numerous books and publications.
Since his retirement to his mini farm east of Cincinnati, Ohio, Simmons has continued to create images as well as write and publish his respective books. His four volume set of books cover all the Star Wars packaging that he and Roy created from 1977 through 2000. Over time, Simmons has been building cabinets to not only house his dioramas which he created for each of his four books but also additional cabinets to display his personal Star Wars Collection.
“The Man Who Shot Luke Skywalker” still occasionally does a little photography in connection with his enduring love for Star Wars toys. His future plans include creating Star Wars scenes for more posters which he plans offer at conventions around the globe.
